Palliative care is an emerging specialty that seeks to improve quality of life for patients facing serious illness and their families.  It functions in an interdisciplinary fashion to manage the burden of physical, psychological, social, and spiritual suffering with a family-centered focus across the full spectrum of patient experiences and care settings.  Palliative care consultation teams have been shown to improve outcomes for patients and families.  Following this series, participants should be able to: identify patients who are appropriate for a palliative care consultation; explain how an interdisciplinary palliative care team can help facilitate communication with seriously ill patients and their families; discuss advanced strategies for pain and symptom management; and justify the creation of palliative care teams to improve quality and reduce medical costs of end-of-life care.
